Suda51: Companies Care Too Much about Metacritic Scores

That's why there are not a lot of unique games.

Grasshopper Manufacture

In the era of remakes and remasters, it can be hard to spot a hidden gem with a unique concept. Why are we drowning in similar games and ideas? Developer Goichi 'Suda51' Suda, the founder of Grasshopper Manufacture, known for Killer7, No More Heroes, and Lollipop Chainsaw, believes it's because "everybody pays too much attention to and cares too much about Metacritic scores."

It seems to him there is "a set formula" that dictates how to get high reviews, which influences how games are made.

"If you've got a game that doesn't fit into that formula, that marketability scope, it loses points on Metacritic. The bigger companies might not want to deal with that kind of thing. That might not be the main reason, but that's certainly one reason why. Everyone cares too much about the numbers," Suda told GamesIndustry.biz.

He himself doesn't care too much about Metacritic scores because releasing games he wants and having people want to play them is more important. However, he does sometimes check them out.

Shinji Mikami, the director of The Evil Within and the first Resident Evil and Dino Crisis, who has collaborated with Suda on Shadows of the Damned, added that smaller games that might have interesting solutions or visions are often overshadowed by big-budget titles.

"The kind of games that get the most marketing support are the ones that need to appeal to as broad an audience as possible," he said. "More unique games don't really have the same marketability."

Well, we are looking forward to unique experiences from both Grasshopper Manufacture and Mikami's new KAMUY studio.
