Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League to Stop Getting Updates in 2025

Unlike XDefiant and Concord, the game will still be playable after the final update's release.

While Marvel Rivals celebrates reaching 10 million players and demonstrates that the community isn't yet tired of either hero shooters or the superhero genre as a whole, Warner Bros.' DC Comics-based Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League appears to be going through an opposite experience, with developer Rocksteady announcing that they will stop releasing regular updates for the game come January.

In its recent blog post announcing the upcoming launch of Season 4 Episode 7, introducing Deathstroke and the Offline mode, Rocksteady confirmed that Season 4 will conclude with Episode 8 on January 14, 2025, which will be the final post-release update for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, meaning the game will have received less than a year of live-service support after its January 30, 2024 launch.

What's more, Episode 8 will not only serve as the last seasonal or episodic content for the game but also as the final update to include any balance changes or fixes going forward. In Warner Bros.' FAQ section, the developer avoided directly addressing future balance updates, instead reiterating that the January 14 update will mark the end of seasonal and episodic content, suggesting that KtJL's development is effectively halting, leaving its state after Episode 8's release unchanged unless a significant issue, like as a game-breaking bug, arises.

To give credit where credit is due, unlike other 2024 letdowns like XDefiant and Concord, which were shut down entirely, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will still be available even after Episode 8's release. According to the devs, players will retain access to both Online and Offline modes, allowing them to experience the main campaign and seasonal story missions or play with friends in the four-player co-op mode.

"Season 4 will finish up with Episode 8, which is scheduled to release in January 2025, and that will serve as the last seasonal Episode for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League," Rocksteady wrote. "While Season 4 Episode 8 will mark the final battle against Brainiac, all online features will continue to be available, so you'll still be able to enjoy co-op with friends, as well as all previous seasonal/episodic content. You'll also have the option to play the game via the new Offline mode, which allows access to the main story campaign and all post-launch seasonal gameplay content without an internet connection."

As disheartening as this announcement may be for the few dozen fans still invested in the game, it was a long time coming, with Jason Schreier predicting "barebones support" similar to the one described above as far back as June.

The first reports and rumors about Warner Bros.' intention to pull the plug on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, however, emerged even earlier, when it was disclosed that the publisher had lost $200 million on the game's development and viewed it as a disappointment. Sadly, when publishers are disappointed, developers are often the first to take the fall, and Rocksteady was no exception, losing nearly 20 QA specialists in August.

Interestingly, in late September, Xbox Era's Shpeshal Nick claimed that Rocksteady was working on a brand-new Batman game, with Sony reportedly pursuing exclusivity for the PlayStation 5. Whether these rumors are true and if the supposed game will earn the acclaim of the beloved Arkham trilogy or the indifference of Kill the Justice League is something we'll likely find out next year.
