Publisher Owlcat Games has announced Shadow of the Road, a tactical role-playing game set in divided Japan in the 19th century developed by Poland-based studio Another Angle Games.
In this narrative-driven game, the whole country is at a crucial moment when the army of Emperor Mutsuhito, equipped with modern technologies, confronts the traditional forces of Shōgun Tokugawa. You step in the shoes of a master strategist and create your own band of warriors. "Assemble your team from a diverse set of characters and test your skills against yōkai and steampunk contraptions," the description on Steam reads.
Shadow of the Road
“Experience classic, turn-based combat with a samurai-tactics flare. Each team member brings their own distinctive set of skills and abilities to the battlefield. Even their personal goals and relationships influence every encounter. If you can master these social and strategic dynamics, then you and your team will no doubt dominate the battlefield.”
The trailer showcases combat scenes in which the protagonist kills enemies using various weapons, such as samurai swords, bows with flaming arrows, guns, and fire-breathing weapons. The strong contrast between modern “steam powered machines” and tradition is easy to see — you’ll feel it when that giant machine scorpion shows up.

You will also feel like getting on a tour of a beautifully crafted Japanese environment. Firstly, we are led into a delicately designed ancient Japanese environment, which is indulged in mist and rich in ancient ruins and traditional Japanese architecture, including the iconic Torii gate. Even though the combat is bloody and tense, the indoor decoration vividly presents the historic view of Japan.
