"We're making the best Borderlands game to date."
A week after Borderlands 4 was announced at Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, the developers of the new co-op looter shooter, which will be released in 2025, discussed its creation at PAX West in Seattle.
Gearbox's Global Creative Executive Officer Andrew Reiner said, "We're making the best Borderlands game to date." Randy Varnell, the Chief Creative Officer, shared that the project's creation started with the question of what the franchise fans loved, what the developers loved, and where those things intersected.
According to the Creative Director, Graeme Timmins, preserving the RPG side of the game was very important as well as making the characters interesting and approachable. Narrative Director Sam Winkler shared that in the new installment of the franchise, the players and the vault hunters will be the central characters: "With Borderlands 4, we want to bring it back to the player. We want to make sure the player and the vault hunters are the central characters of our story. We want to make sure the world is reactive, that the world is grounded."
Sam Winkler also touched upon the tone of the game: "While we keep our humor that brings a lot of people coming back to our franchise, in the game, we want to make sure that it's situational, that it emerges naturally. So while we're building these characters, we're always making sure that they have strong personalities, that they will react differently to different situations, that we see the effects of that."
The new Borderlands 4 teaser trailer starts at the point when Borderland 3 ended and is set on a new planet with new vault hunters. Take a look at the stunning concept art images of the new title shared by the developers:
