Take a Look at This Minecraft-Style Game Prototype with Voxel Planets

Bowerbyte provided a detailed breakdown of how they made Minecraft spherical.

Check out this creative project by 3D Artist Bowerbyte, inspired by the beloved sandbox game Minecraft. The artist is developing a game prototype in Unity with C#, featuring voxel blocks mapped onto a spherical planet.

The planet with cube-like environments is procedurally generated and fully destructible, and players can place or remove more than 20 different block types, including grass, leaves, water, and terrain. As shared by Bowerbyte, the project presented some design challenges, mostly related to minimizing block distortion.

The project was inspired by a tech demo by Developer Jordan Peck, with some additional features like block textures and large-scale destruction introduced to Bowerbyte's version:

Bowerbyte shared free playable builds that you can try in a browser on a Windows PC. Also, the developer presented a breakdown of the project's creation, explaining how they tackled the technical challenges, like as the surface of our blocky sphere not aligning with the direction of gravity, and illustrated it with the WIP screenshots. You can find the breakdown here:
