Teachers In Poland Use Half-Life: Alyx For Remote Education

Keeping students interested might be difficult, but you can always rely on Half-Life: Alyx.

Szkoła 33, a high school in Poland, found a cool way to make education interesting during the lockdown. The school hosted six VR sessions in Half-Life: Alyx on various subjects with some of the sessions running for more than two hours and featuring live and pre-recorded material. The lessons were uploaded to Facebook, Twitch, and YouTube

"We decided to use VR in lessons because it seemed like a good opportunity to try something new and to engage our students in online classes," Katarzyna Sut, English and Spanish teacher, told Upload VR. "The pandemic had just started back then, the schools were closed, and we wanted to interest our students in the classes somehow. We also hoped that it would help them with the uncomfortable situation everyone found themselves in – those first few weeks were not easy for kids, being on lockdown in their homes and not able to roam freely."

Poland went into an early lockdown in an attempt to mitigate the spread of the virus, with schools closing on March 11th, 2020. Online learning was made compulsory on March 25th.

Szkoła 33’ decided to explore VR lessons to keep children interested, combining educational material with entertainment. The school teamed up with local media company OFFshot to prepare the Half-Life: Alyx VR classes. They used an HTC VIVE Pro and three cameras to record languages, math, and science lessons. The main problem was that the teachers had never used VR before, so they had to train for half an hour before the hosting lessons.

The experiment paid off as they believe their students liked the new format. The students gathered on Facebook to watch lessons, share them, and react with emojis.

You can just imagine it "now class, if you have 80 headcrabs and divide them by 5 people, how many headcrabs does each person have?" Ans: "enough to ruin your day?" (^__^) "partial credit!"
