Team Fortress 2 Gets a Huge Update, Attracts a Record Number of Users

Is it holiday-sized?

Team Fortress 2 fans, rejoice! The game received a huge update yesterday – something that happens so rarely that it's become a meme. As far as I understand, this is the infamous full-sized holiday-sized update that Valve promised back in February.

If you missed it, the company wanted to introduce new "items, maps, taunts, unusual effects, war paints and who knows what else" but then downsized it and added "other community-contributed fixes for the game".

Here is what the developers did for this summer update:

  • Featuring 14 new community maps: Sharkbay, Rotunda, Phoenix, Cashworks, Venice, Reckoner, Sulfur, Hardwood, Pelican Peak, Selbyen, VSH Tiny Rock, VSH Distillery, VSH Skirmish, and VSH Nucleus
  • Added the Summer 2023 Cosmetic Case containing 25 new community-contributed items
  • Added 6 new community-contributed taunts to the Mann Co. Store
  • Added 20 new community-created Unusual effects
  • Added the Summer 2023 War Paint Case
  • All cosmetic and taunt cases will grant Summer 2023 Unusual effects instead of their normal Unusual effects during the Summer event. This does not include crates.
  • The Summer event runs through September 15th, 2023

Plus many fixes and improvements. I don't know about you, but it does look holiday-sized to me.

The update was definitely a success: TF2 hit its new concurrent players record – 222,279 people at the moment of writing, and the number is growing with every minute (seriously, check it out).
