Tencent Is Reportedly Working on Mobile Version of Elden Ring

It will be free to play.

It looks like Shadow of the Erdtree is not the only Elden Ring game we might see in the future, there is also a mobile experience allegedly in the works, but not by FromSoftware.

According to Reuters' sources, Tencent is working on an adaptation of the popular RPG. While the original is buy-to-play, the mobile game will be free but with in-app purchases, similar to Genshin Impact. However, as the outlet noted, Elden Ring's design "is at odds with Tencent's planned model."

Tencent bought a 16% stake in FromSoftware in 2022 and also acquired the licensing rights for the game the same year, asking a team of "a few dozen people" to work on the mobile prototype.

The Chinese company's desire to adapt Elden Ring is understandable, considering its wild success in 2022 and sales of over 20 million in the first year after launch. However, Tencent wanted to do the same with the NieR series earlier but reportedly canceled the project due to the inability to find a suitable monetization model.

Hopefully, this won't happen to Elden Ring as I'm curious to see how Tencent handles monetization there.
