Apparently, an incorrect file included in a launch-day patch was the reason for the game's stuttering issue.
Striking Distance's The Callisto Protocol was released on December 2 and its launch didn't go as smoothly as it was probably planned – players experienced a number of issues including FPS drops on consoles and constant stuttering on PC.
Some players complained that the game looked like an "unoptimized mess" or even that it was almost unplayable.
Soon after players started complaining about the game's state, Striking Distance's head and The Callisto Protocol director Glen Schofield commented on Twitter that the stuttering issue happened due to an error after the rush of one of the employees – according to him, the wrong files were uploaded to the release patch.
The comment was immediately met with backlash from players who didn't like the tone of the message and noted that it was disrespectful to say this about the developers, especially, publicly. Twitter users also recalled Schofield's tweet where he shared that the studio's employees usually spend 12-15 hours a day, six-seven days a week working on the studio's projects which seemed that the Striking Distance head confirmed the studio's crunch culture.
Due to technical issues, The Callisto Protocol's rating on Steam was marked as "Negative" on the launch day, with only 22% of all reviews being positive. Users' first reviews also caused KRAFTON's stock to drop as, apparently, the reception was worse than some investors expected.
With the release of the patch, the situation slightly improved – at the time of writing, the game's rating is listed as "Mixed" and it has 57% of positive reviews.
