Warhammer Skulls showcase introduced the first classic cRPG set in the Warhammer 40k universe and revealed a few details on the Space Marine sequel.
Warhammer video games festival, Warhammer Skulls, is back – it kicked off on June 1 with a live showcase that featured an array of projects. As part of the event, the organizers showed a lot of trailers, revealed new details on ongoing projects, and made several announcements.
Among others, Owlcat Games, the developer behind Pathfinder, announced it is making Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. The game is the first classic cRPG set in the Warhammer 40k universe.
The player will take on the role of a Rogue Trader, a descendant of a dynasty of daring privateers, who, together with his team, will explore the outskirts of the galaxy "with the blessing of the Emperor Himself" and expand the borders of the Imperium. According to the announcement, the player's decisions will affect the development of entire star systems as well as individual characters.
The game will launch on PC and consoles, although the release date hasn't been announced yet. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is already available for pre-order.
"We’re really excited to open a new chapter in Owlcat Games history. Working on such a remarkable universe as Warhammer 40,000 is a great honor but also a responsibility and challenge for us as a team," Owlcat Games head Oleg Shpilchevsky said in a press release.
As part of the event, the audience was also shown a short video dedicated to the development of Space Marine 2. In the video, Saber Interactive, the creator of the game, said that it tried to recreate the galactic warfare exactly like in the novels. Saber Interactive Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits also spoke about the heavy load of fan expectations from the sequel. At the same time, the creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick added that no one expects more from a game than its creators.
However, except for a few new gameplay shots, the video didn't provide any new information on Space Marine 2. You can learn more about Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader here and about Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 here.
The Warhammer team also presented a retro shooter called Boltgun. The game is developed by Bristol-based Auroch Digital and published by Focus Entertainment. It is expected to release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5. Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S and Nintendo Switch in 2023.
