The Last of Us Multiplayer Developers Say Goodbye to the Game

It was supposed to be a great project, based on what the creators are saying.

A week ago, Naughty Dog announced that its "most ambitious project" had been canceled as it was taking too many resources and it didn't want to become a "solely live-service games studio." Now, it wants to focus on single-player narrative games "that have defined Naughty Dog's heritage." The Last of Us multiplayer game was supposed to be an important title for the studio, but it's probably never going to be launched now, and it's a pity because it sounds like a great game based on what its developers are saying.

Some of them went to social media to say their goodbyes and express disappointment. For the technical designer Nathaniel Ferguson, this TLOU multiplayer game has been "the highlight of [his] career" and "a very special project": "A sad day, but very bright horizons ahead for sure."

"Loved every minute working on this project. Long live The Last of Us Online," added Naughty Dog's associate producer Abigail Tan.

For game designer Karl Morley, it was a great learning moment that taught him more than any other in his career, he "had more fun playing this game than any other MP game before and since." What high praise, I wish we could get a glimpse of what we're missing now, although I can predict the comments already. Speaking of comments, the company turned those off, so I guess the heat was a bit too much to handle.

"It’s never easy to have a game cancelled, but I’m so proud of my studio and everything we accomplished on this project. <3 big shoutout to my combat QA and dialogue teams," said dialogue director Kat McNally.

Of course, the reaction to the news was not all bad. Some fans were glad Naughty Dog decided to pour its attention into single-player games, doing what they do best. However, the worst part of the situation is the people who'd spent years on the project that will most likely never see the light of day.
