The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Might Support 40 Players in Lobby

Some new information has been found in a profile of a former Naughty Dog employee.

The Last of Us multiplayer game has had troubled development and we haven't heard much about it since Naughty Dog postponed its "most ambitious project" in May. But now, a new piece of information has emerged, suggesting the game will support 40 players in a lobby if it ever comes out.

Or so was the plan at least when Ian Blake was still an Associate Game Designer at Naughty Dog. As spotted by Redditor PunishedCoyote, Blake mentioned in his profile that he'd "worked in a dedicated host environment, designing and optimizing for up to 40 clients" and "designed and implemented several systems and set pieces and refined them through regular playtests and feedback" when on board an "unannounced multiplayer project".

As he has participated in the development of The Last of Us Part 1, there's little doubt what that project is, although we can't rule out something totally different, of course.

The multiplayer game in the Last of Us universe was confirmed by Neil Druckmann last year, but the development has presumably been going on since 2018. Last October, a job listing suggested the game would be free to play. For now, all we have are two concept art pieces and rumors.

Unfortunately, the team behind it has recently lost Anders Howard, its Principal Monetization Designer.
