The Number of Young Chinese Gamers Decreased to 83 Million in 2022

The number of Chinese gamers aged 6 to 17 decreased from 122 million in 2020 to 83 million in 2022 due to the regulations that restricted the amount of time that youth gamers in China can play video games.

Niko Partners has released a new report covering the analysis of how the September 2021 regulations, have affected gamers aged 6 to 17 in China.

To remind you, the regulations introduced in the country in September 2021 restricted the amount of time that youth gamers in China could play video games. According to the new rules, minors in China are only allowed to play on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and legal holidays, for one hour per day between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. limiting the youth to just 3 hours per week.

The report reads that due to the new regulation, the number of gamers aged 6 to 17 decreased from 122 million in 2020 to 83 million in 2022. At the same time, analysts are confident that the number of young players will grow to 115 million by 2026.

Prior to the regulations coming into force, approximately 60% of children and teenagers identified themselves as gamers. Now there are about 40%.

77% of young gamers from the country now play fewer hours a week as a result of the regulation, and 54% only play during approved gaming hours. Only 29% of young Chinese gamers play more than 3 hours a week with parents helping them in this – 82% are allowed to use their ID to enter the game.

The report also reads that 52% of young gamers agree that the time spent playing games should be limited, while 76% believe that video games have a positive impact.
