Creative Director of Remedy Entertainment Sam Lake said in an interview with Eurogamer that some concepts for the original Alan Wake 2 were adapted into other titles.
The major part of the ideas for the upcoming Alan Wake 2 ended up being revised into Alan Wake's American Nightmare, a controversial and player-driven spin-off with an emphasis on action. According to Lake, Remedy's next two games - the TV series-crossed adventure thriller Quantum Break and the universe-sharing action game Control with Alan Wake - also started out as ideas for Alan Wake 2.
Other concepts such as live-action cutscenes were adapted for the Xbox-exclusive title Quantum Break, where players take charge of a mission before the plot develops into long-lasting pre-recorded TV programme episodes. Lake said that the developers were planning to proceed in a similar manner for Alan Wake 2, but Microsoft turned down the opportunity to create the sequel in favour of fresh concepts.
The creative Director explained that publishers were pushing against single-player games, claiming that "linear single-player games are a thing of the past". His original idea was to create live-action mini-episodes in between the episodes of the game, but Microsoft was not "really interested in going on with Alan Wake", explained Lake. That eventually resulted in the development of Quantum Break, a time travel story. Alan Wake 2 will be finally released on October 17, 2023, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S.
