The Super Mario Bros. Movie Earns $377 Million Five Days Since Its Release

Surpassing all projections, the Mario movie has got the highest-grossing debut of all video-game-based films ever produced.

Despite harsh reviews from critics, or maybe even thanks to them, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has shown one of the best financial debuts among all animated movies and is currently warp-piping its way to becoming the highest-grossing video-game-based film adaptation.

Just five days since its release, the Mario movie has brought its creators Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Nintendo $377 million, earning $204.6 million domestically and $173 million at the international box office. As reported by Variety, the film in question has shown the second-biggest debut ever for an animated title, surpassed only by Pixar's 2018 Incredibles 2, the highest-grossing opening for Illumination, and the best video game adaptation opening, beating the previous record holder Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

At the moment, the movie is around $63 million away from becoming the most financially successful video game-based film adaptation, with the record currently being held by the 2016 Warcraft with its $439 million worldwide gross.
