Mario Movie Earned $66 Million First Day

Critics' and viewers' opinions are divided.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released on April 5 and managed to score $66 million worldwide on the first day. As noted by Deadline, it had the top animated launch day ever in 11 markets including Germany, Spain, Argentina, Central America and Austria.

Produced by Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Nintendo, the film is expected to earn more than $100 million over Friday and the weekend and $150 million in five days starting on Wednesday.

Despite its popularity, critics didn't seem to appreciate the movie. While it got a 96% score from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, only 54% of critics gave it a positive review, not impressed by the story and pacing.
