There Are No Plans To Make Season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

CDPR Japan's country manager Satoru Honma shared that the studio doesn't plan to work on the continuation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as the anime was initially planned as a standalone project.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a Netflix anime series based on CD Projekt RED's video game Cyberpunk 2077, has had a really good reception – the series was in Netflix’s global top ten for over a month and has one of the streaming platform’s highest review scores ever.

Even the original creator of the Cyberpunk universe Mike Pondsmith expressed his approval saying the team behind the anime "nailed it." The renowned game designer Hideo Kojima also praised the anime noting that it was "the most shocking thing" he's seen since Arcane.

The series' success also influenced the popularity of Cyberpunk 2077, with the game's player count on Steam reaching the highest numbers since the game's release in 2020.

Given Cyberpunk: Edgerunners's unprecedented success, many have been wondering if the anime's producers, CD Projekt RED and Japan-based animation company Studio Trigger, would consider working on a continuation of the story. However, according to CDPR Japan's country manager Satoru Honma, the studios do not have such plans.

In an interview with the Japanese outlet Famitsu, Honma said that he would like to continue to collaborate with Japanese studios to create more anime in the future, however, CDPR will unlikely work on the next part of Edgerunners.

According to Honma, the anime was initially planned as a standalone project. He also added that he is not sure whether the studio will continue to work on it or create an absolutely new project if it has a chance to once again collaborate with Japanese studios.

"I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback," Honuma said (translated by VGC). "However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as 'we are actually working on Season 2 in the background.'"

I wouldn't mind more stories in the Cyberpunk Universe... hell animate the old Legends and have a field day expanding the lore.
