This 3D Animated Squat Would Make Even Boris the Slav King Proud

Heels on ground, comrade found.

Senior 3D Animator and the author of the popular Apollo and Artemis rigs, Ramon Arango, continues to push the boundaries of CG human anatomy with his latest project that would make even Boris the Slav King proud: a custom-made Maya rig designed for achieving a perfect heels-on-the-ground squat in 3D.

According to Ramon, Gopnik's default pose, easily replicable in real life, is quite difficult to achieve in 3D, with rigs often struggling with bending the knee beyond 90 degrees, leading to issues such as intersections, loss of volume, pointy kneecaps, and other artifacts. To circumvent that, the author used Corrective Joints and separated the upper and lower legbones, thus making the rig look somewhat anatomically-accurate. Going forward, the artist plans to add this setup to his collection of downloadable rigs and share it on Gumroad.

Earlier, Ramon also showcased two brand-new mannequin rigs set to hit the shelves later this week, you can learn more by clicking this link:
