This Browser-Based Tool Turns Pixel Art Into Animated 3D Models

Check out elunvar's project.

If you enjoyed our coverage yesterday of Easymetric, a plug-in for Aseprite by Oroshibu, you'll also appreciate a similar tool created by elunvar that works in the browser and allows you to export 3D models for further use.

According to the developer, this editor uses a 2D pixel art image combined with a depth map for each frame, then extrudes based on that depth. This process is applied to each individual layer. You can animate individual layers and export everything as a GLB file.

Right now, it's still an experiment. elunvar plans to complete the animation editor first, then create a small game, something like a platformer, using only assets made with this tool. The developer also mentioned wanting to make the tool as accessible as possible and considering releasing it on itch.io with optional donations, unless a better distribution idea comes up.
