This Free Add-On Helps You Bake Texture Maps & Lighting in Blender

Daniel Bystedt has shipped an upgraded version of Bystedt's Blender Baker.

Senior Concept Artist and Blender enthusiast Daniel Bystedt has released an upgraded version of Bystedt's Blender Baker, a free add-on for Blender that can help you save time on baking PBR texture maps and lighting in the open-source 3D software.

For those unaware, the add-on was first launched back in 2021, designed to make it easier and quicker to bake data from high-resolution models to use with low-res versions in games and real-time projects. At its initial release, the toolkit offered the capability to set up Normal, Displacement, and Ambient Occlusion layers, in addition to handling Metallic, Roughness, and Glossy settings.

The enhanced version of the plug-in has been updated to ensure compatibility with the latest long-term support version of Blender, Blender 3.6 LTS. It also introduces various bug fixes aimed at resolving issues that previously caused baked images to turn black when using Blender 3.5 and higher. Furthermore, the upgraded version introduces the new option to bake Thickness Maps, expanding the tool's capabilities.

Here's the full list of bug fixes introduced with the update:

  • Fixed bug with black baked images with Blender 3.5 and higher versions.
  • Fixed bug with bit depth precision that could cause artifacts in the baked Normal.
  • Fixed crash when baking displacement pass and bake source material was missing displacement.
  • Fixed bug with an infinite loop that would lock Blender.
  • Fixed bug so that objects' hide_viewport state will be restored after baking is completed.
  • Fixed bug with exploded bake positions to avoid objects being too close to each other.

Back in August, the artist also shipped Bystedt's Cloth Builder, a great Blender plug-in that will help you simulate cloth, be it a napkin, curtains, or clothing. With this tool, cloth can be simulated and manipulated during the simulation. It also comes with some cloth assets so you can start experimenting right away.

And in 2022, the creator showcased a cool Geometry Nodes-powered procedural tool that would allow its users to create 3D spaceship concepts in just a click of a button.
