In case you missed it, back in August, Game Developer and the creator of Might of Merchants, an upcoming economic and trading simulator with role-playing elements set in a medieval kingdom, Hannes Breuer, released Canvas of Kings, an amazing mapmaking tool for creating minimalistic hand-drawn-style maps created using Godot, Vulkan, and GDScript.
First revealed earlier this year, the app was initially developed as an auxiliary tool for MoM, eventually turning into a fully-fledged program for creating great maps that can be used for TTRPGs and other similar endeavors. It focuses on randomness and auto-generated elements, allowing the user to set up various medieval-style maps by simply drawing adjustable and customizable paths and plots of land, with the app featuring automatic object placement.
Canvas of Kings offers users the convenience of adjusting object properties randomly and using object categories to craft a diverse map, eliminating the need for manual placement and adjustments. It also enables users to combine objects, such as stacking crates on towers or walls and moving them together. Additionally, the tool includes a built-in lighting and weather system, allowing users to easily change the atmosphere of their map according to their preferences.
The tool allows you to:
- Create fully procedurally generated maps
- Paint the landscape in the classic way
- Create interior views of buildings or caves
- Insert texts or decorative elements
- Import custom assets
- Export to VTT format (except: png/jpg, with/without grid. Map is saved as .json)
- Create animations
