This New Indie RTS Game Brings Back That Classic Warcraft Magic

The Scouring, a real-time strategy game with action-RPG elements, is now in Early Access.

Miss classic RTS vibes and the spirit of the original Warcraft trilogy? Studio Orc Group has released The Scouring, a real-time strategy game with action-RPG elements, into Early Access on Steam. The title blends classic RTS mechanics with hero-centric gameplay, drawing comparisons to Warcraft II, Starcraft, and early Blizzard-era design. A playable demo is available now, with the game boasting a "Very Positive" rating (87%).

The Scouring is built on a custom C++ engine praised for its fluid performance and integrated physics. Battles are enhanced by destructible environments, realistic effects, and tactical day-night cycles that alter gameplay flow – factions clash by day, while undead forces emerge at night, demanding strategic adaptation.

One of the game's standout mechanics is the ability to delegate whole army and base control to AI, letting players focus entirely on their hero character, who can level up, gather loot, and shape battlefield outcomes. This hybrid approach delivers both large-scale command and personal combat depth.

The game supports single-player and multiplayer modes, including co-op skirmishes and free-for-all duels. With full Steam Workshop integration, players can create and share custom maps, AI scripts, and missions, promoting community-driven growth.

The Scouring is priced at $22.49 (currently available at a 10% discount until August 26). The developers plan to remain in Early Access for approximately 18 months, with four major updates already scheduled.
