This Procedural Animation Was Made in Unreal Engine 5 With Control Rig

Roy Livne showcased a great walking turret animation achieved with UE5.3.

Roy Livne, an experienced 3D Generalist, Technical Artist, and Unreal Engine Developer/Instructor, has recently showcased the capabilities of Control Rig in Unreal Engine 5.3, the latest stable version of Epic Games' renowned engine, demonstrating an impressive procedural animation achieved with it.

For those unaware, Control Rig is a tool within Unreal Engine designed for rigging and animating 3D characters in real-time directly in the engine. Using Control Rig, you can eliminate the need to rig and animate characters in external software and, instead, animate them directly within Unreal Editor. By leveraging this system, you can create and rig custom controls for characters, animate using Sequencer, and make use of various other animation tools to assist in your animation process.

With the release of Unreal Engine 5.3, the toolset was further enhanced, with Epic Games adding the ability to use data outside of the Control Rig graph to procedurally create and modify the rig. The release also included the new GetUserData node that will query incoming data and the novel Set Shape Library from User Data node that can be used to swap the shape library currently being referenced.

Equipped with the enhanced Control Rig and a Sketchfab model, Roy presented a fluid walking turret animation. According to the author, the robot will eventually be turned into an NPC for an upcoming game, currently in its pre-production phase.

"It opens up so much possibilities," commented the creator on the project and the new Control Rig. "It's a big setup, I'll be happy to show. It has a bunch of functions and nodes so I'll perhaps do a breakdown video. The skeleton is pretty straightforward, that was the easy part."
