This PS5 Mod Installs Linux, Turning the Console into a Steam Machine
Andy Nguyen published the PS5-Linux loader.
You can now install Linux on your PlayStation 5 with a custom solution from modder Andy Nguyen, who ported Linux to the PS5, turning it into a Steam Machine. Earlier, the modder demonstrated the system in action, running Grand Theft Auto 5 enhanced with ray tracing.
The methodology has been published on GitHub. As explained by the developer, the PS5-Linux loader is powered by 8 CPU cores at 3.5 GHz and a GPU at 2.23 GHz, and provides enough performance to run Steam games and various emulators. The tool supports HDMI 4K60 video and audio output. Several limitations apply. The mod only works on disc-based consoles running firmware 3.xx or 4.xx, and newer 5.xx builds and older 1.xx and 2.xx versions are not supported.
There's also a limitation that the Linux installation does not persist between sessions and must be reinstalled every time the console is restarted. The feature to retain the Linux install in Rest Mode is in development.
