This Tip Will Help You Fix Normal Maps in Blender

HotdogNugget showed how to fix a bug with Normal Maps in Blender using a custom nodegroup.

Technical Artist and Blender enthusiast Alex Heskett, a.k.a. HotdogNugget, has recently shared an insightful breakdown, showing how to fix a bug with Normal Maps in Blender. According to Alex, the Normal Map node in Blender has a flaw where it incorrectly applies Normal Maps when the strength setting is not set to 1. To overcome this issue, Alex demonstrated how to create a custom nodegroup as a solution.

In the breakdown, Alex provided a visual comparison to showcase the potential problems caused by the bug and shared a node graph of a fixed Normal Map node, noting that the upgraded setup also lets you easily invert the Normal Map by setting the strength to -1. You can check out the full breakdown by clicking this link.
