Sony demonstrated a cool proof-of-concept project showcasing the latest developments in real-time game engine technology.
In case you missed it, during the recently-concluded Sony Creators Conference (SCC), a two-day event held in conjunction with SIGGRAPH 2023 that celebrated the works of creators across Sony who leverage groundbreaking current-gen technology to pursue their creative vision, Sony presented a cool proof-of-concept project showcasing the latest advancements in real-time game engine technology.
Leveraging Unreal Engine and Sony's own motion capture stage, the team has managed to create a realistic-looking Ghostbusters short film, depicting the iconic Ecto-1 car as it cruised the streets of a realistic digital recreation of New York City and engaged in a showdown with the infamous Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man – an unforgettable character from the original 1984 film.
According to the team, the short was made in collaboration with Ghost Corps, Pixomondo, PlayStation Studios, and Epic Games in just one day, noting that capturing this sequence using traditional methods could have taken several days of filming.

"If we're shooting in New York City, like we just did on this last Ghostbusters film, you're thinking about how many shots you can get done in a day, and in New York City, it's very few because you are very limited in scope, and there is a kind of natural flow of traffic and pedestrians," commented Ghostbusters: Afterlife Director Jason Reitman, who also directed the short film. "You have to let traffic go every once and a while. There's so many obstacles to shooting there, and you know, you're lucky if you can get six or eight shots in a day there, and here we shot this entire thing. Like everything you just watched, we did in a day."
