These techniques by Charles Boury will help you turn boring things into awesome designs.
Charles Boury, Art Director for Road 96, has recently launched a great thread on simple tricks you can use to break repetition and create lovely steps in Blender players would want to climb. The first step is to break all the proportions because identical things are too boring to spend time on them. The artist also recommends to "bevel all the vertices, "at least the ones sticking out. Don't just bevel, fiddle with the position of resulting vertices, to change the bevel slope and size."
