He also reaffirmed that the game is still in development and revealed that even has a codename.
As Starfield's release date approaches, less than a week away for some, another Bethesda game is starting to get more and more attention, a title that is arguably even more anticipated than the new space RPG – the long-awaited sixth installment in The Elder Scrolls series.
Unveiled for the first time during E3 2018, interestingly on the same day as Starfield's reveal, TES VI has remained relatively low-profile since then. The initial announcement trailer stands as its solitary official representation, accompanied by occasional developer interviews that serve as reminders of the game's existence and ongoing development. In five years, the only bit of information we know about the new TES game is that it will feature mountains that the player will most likely be able to climb.
Recent revelations have shed light on the fact that even Bethesda's legendary Director Todd Howard has some regrets about the unveiling of The Elder Scrolls VI. In a recent interview with GQ, Howard revealed that he considers the game's way-too-early announcement to be a mistake and wishes to have approached the occasion differently.
"I have asked myself that a lot," Howard said when asked about the TES 6 announcement. "I don't know. I probably would've announced it more casually."
When asked about giving further insight into the game, Howard remained silent and even declined to disclose the codename of the title, only mentioning that it does indeed have one and that he likes to say it out loud.
"It's like… I don't want to answer, but I want to be polite. I will say that we want it to fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator," he said when asked to share additional information about TES 6. "And there are different ways to accomplish that given the time that has passed."

With even Todd Howard, who, let's be frank, is known to exaggerate when it comes to promoting the upcoming games, refusing to provide any substantial details, it appears that The Elder Scrolls VI is indeed many years away from being released, and any new TES-related reveals, trailers, dev logs, announcements, and such are unlikely in the near future.
However, a recent development indicates that there might be a way to fill the years of anticipation for TES 6 by playing Starfield. According to Pete Hines, Bethesda's Head of Publishing, the new space RPG is incredibly time-consuming. He mentioned that his own playthrough is nearing 200 hours, yet he's far from completing it and still has a vast amount of unexplored content ahead.
In the interview, Howard also announced that Starfield will feature a New Game+ mode with "a unique and exciting twist".
Starfield is coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S on September 6, 2023. You can learn more and pre-order the game here.
