The figure includes the reboot trilogy which has sold 38 million copies alone.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
During the live stream devoted to the Embracer deal to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal, some interesting information was revealed including sales of the last two parts in the Deus Ex series as well as lifetime sales of the Tomb Raider franchise.
Since its inception in 1996, the Tomb Raider series has sold over 88 million copies. Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos noted that 38 million came from the reboot trilogy alone, which includes Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This means that the trilogy amounted to 43% of total franchise sales.
The developers also shared that the number of paid downloads of mobile titles on Lara Croft including Lara Croft: Relic Run and Lara Croft: Go has exceeded 53 million. Besides, the average score for the entire series reached 81% on Metacritic and 4.6 on the AppStore as of January 2022.
Scot Amos emphasized that the Tomb Raider brand is still strong as ever saying: "This is just looking at the games. We still have an entire transmedia world out there, known for films, new series coming, comics, and looking across what the possibilities are for this franchise, I tell you the best is yet to come."
Last month, the studio announced that the next Tomb Raider game is already in development and shared that it will be powered by Unreal Engine 5. Apart from that, Crystal Dynamics is currently working on Perfect Dark in cooperation with The Initiative.
