Tony Hawk revealed that Activision planned the remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 but had to cancel the project due to the merger of developer Vicarious Visions with Blizzard Entertainment.
Tony Hawk has recently confirmed that following the successful remakes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, other games in the series, particularly, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, were also planned to be remastered, although this project died after the merger of developer Vicarious Visions with Blizzard Entertainment.
"That was the plan; even up until the release day of [Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2], we were going 3 + 4," Hawk shared during a recent Twitch live stream with Andy Gentile. "And then Vicarious got kind of absorbed, and then they were looking for other developers, and then it was over."
It was announced in January last year that Vicarious Visions would be joining the Blizzard Entertainment team. The studio was acquired by Activision in 2005, making Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in addition to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. Currently, approximately 200 employees contribute to Blizzard Entertainment's projects and no longer create games as a lead developer.
According to Hawk, Activision didn't want to ditch the project when Vicarious Visions was absorbed by Blizzard and was trying to cooperate with another studio to work on the games. However, it wasn't able to find an appropriate match and eventually canceled the project.
"The truth of it is that [Activision] were trying to find somebody to do 3 + 4 but they just didn’t really trust anyone the way they did Vicarious, so they took other pitches from other studios. Like, ‘What would you do with the THPS title?’ And they didn’t like anything they heard, and then that was it," Hawk said.
