Tutorial: Hand-To-Hand Combat Finishers In Unreal

Learn how you can create complex combat animations in UE4.

The CodeLikeMe channel on YouTube has recently shared a tutorial for Unreal Engine users that covers setting up combat finishers and a hand-to-hand combat system inside the engine. Unlike normal kicks and punches, the finishers require longer animation sequences featuring complex movements and interactions between two characters.

"In order to work them properly, both character meshes should be in proper synchronization, otherwise, it would look odd and won't see the connection/interaction between two characters involved in," wrote the author. "Also, if the start location and end location is different for a finisher animation, we have to rely on rootmotion to apply proper movement to the character." The situation leads to challenges with the interaction of characters with other physics rules and collisions.

The tutorial covers this complex challenge and shows how you can set up organic combat moves for your characters in Unreal Engine. You can also find project files on the developer's Patreon
