Tutorial: Procedural 2D Aim Animation In GameMaker

The developers of Rusted Moss shared the code for free.

See how to make procedural 2D aim animation the way it was done in Rusted Moss, a twin-stick shooter pixel art metroidvania where you sling around the map with a physics-based grapple.

Rusted Moss utilizes the grapple and weapons with a full 360° aiming system, offering a smooth experience that puts you in total command of your character. Tackle creative traversal challenges with flexible movement and take down witches and machines with pinpoint precision.

While this grapple is challenging to master, it's highly rewarding once you do. Similar to rock climbing, there's no set path through this abandoned wasteland, so grab onto any moss-covered structure and swing your way through the landscape. This unique elastic hook harnesses your kinetic momentum to propel the character forward.

As a twin-stick shooter, Rusted Moss also offers sharp, precise gunplay. You can seamlessly switch between weapons to adapt to your playstyle and the situation at hand. For example, get up close with a shotgun, then grapple away and finish off your foes with a sniper shot for the kill.

For more details on the procedural aiming, you can access the code shared by the developers on GitHub.
