Rumored Twisted Metal Reboot May Be a Multiplayer Game That Features On-Foot Combat

The game will supposedly be released on PS5 and Steam.

Alleged details on the rumored Twisted Metal reboot have appeared online suggesting that the game may receive a multiplayer mode and on-foot combat.

At the beginning of last year, it was reported that Sony moved the development of the Twisted Metal revival from Lucid Games to one of its European first-party studios and later rumors suggested that Firesprite, the British developer acquired by Sony in September 2021, had taken over the development.

Apparently, the development of the title may have been delayed as several new job postings, supposedly for the project, recently appeared on the Firesprite website (as spotted by ResetEra user Smitch).

If the job ads are in fact intended to recruit developers for Twisted Metal, they suggest that the game will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and will include multiplayer features, as stated in the ad for Principal Physics Programmer. According to the studio, the project is set to "break new ground in multiplayer, blending gameplay mechanics in new ways and deeply embedding storytelling elements into a unique universe."

In addition, the game will apparently bring an opportunity to fight outside a vehicle. That's according to a job posting for a Principal Designer position which says that this specialist will work on mechanics for "vehicular and on-foot combat."

Meanwhile, Lead AI Programmer will work on "AI, NPC behaviors, pathfinding, navigation, decision trees, choice systems."

According to Smitch, the job postings also implied that Twisted Metal could be compatible with the PS VR2 since the listings mentioned that "experience developing gameplay for VR would be useful."  Additionally, the ads stated that knowledge of "Steam and PSN back ends" would be a plus suggesting that Sony could be planning the game's PC release as early as the development stage. However, this information is no longer visible in the current job descriptions.

It's worth noting that the Twisted Metal reboot has not been officially announced but there is a widespread belief that Sony intends to revive the car combat franchise to coincide with the 2023 release of its TV series adaptation.
