This move aims “to better balance the benefits of remote and in-office work.”
Ubisoft
Ubisoft has asked all its employees around the world to work in the office for at least three days per week. This model has been followed by approximately a third of its employees for the past few years and now will be implemented across all of its global divisions.
“We have adopted a hybrid work model globally over the last few years and gained valuable insights. We are now looking at refining it to better balance the benefits of remote and in-office work, targeting at least three days per week at the office,” says Ubisoft in a statement. (Thanks, Gamesbeat)
Ubisoft didn’t specify the starting date of this policy as it will depend on local management, who will contact the staff soon regarding the next moves. In an announcement sent by Marie-Sophie de Waubert, Chief Studios & Portfolio Officer at Ubisoft, the company promised that it “will not go back to a 100% office-based model” as it values the advantages of a hybrid work style, which provides better flexibility and work-life balance.
“However, we also confirmed all the positive energy and unique benefits that come from being together in person. These shared moments foster stronger collaboration and deeper connections,” reads the message.
Marie-Sophie de Waubert continues to discuss the advantages of staff working together in person, including “solving problems and making decisions more effectively”; it is also considered more convenient for staff to learn from each other, and more importantly, it would be easier for newcomers to learn the tools and get to know the team’s "ways of doing things." Last but not least, it’s “essential to build mutual trust within and between teams.”
Ubisoft
Ubisoft is not the first company to ask employees to return to the office after the pandemic period, when remote work style was favored. Earlier this year, Techland, a renowned game developer from Poland behind the Dying Light franchise, ended its remote work policy, transitioning most roles to either an on-site or hybrid model. The company had to sacrifice partition walls and social spaces for more working space.
Also, Rockstar had asked its employees to return to the office five days a week starting in April, a decision that placed the developer “in the best position to deliver the next Grand Theft Auto at the level of quality,” but faced strong criticization by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and several of its members.
