The next entry in the Ghost Recon series will reportedly be released as early as the fiscal year 2023.
Just two days after it was announced that Ubisoft ended content updates for Ghost Recon Breakpoint, more news is brought about the franchise – the next Ghost Recon, codenamed OVER will reportedly see the light of day as early as the fiscal year 2023.
Details about the creation of the next games in the Ghost Recon series were shared by Kotaku citing its own sources familiar with the development. The project that had originally been leaked by NVIDIA has supposedly been in development for over a year and will be the next mainline game in the series. The development will be led by the Ubisoft Paris studio, the team responsible for Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
The report also noted that instead of teasing the new project as part of the franchise's 20th anniversary last year, Ubisoft demonstrated the free-to-play tactical shooter Ghost Recon: Frontline. The game later was relaunched after developers received a lot of negative feedback during internal testing. It is still unclear when the game is set to be released, but it should not be expected in the near future, Kotaku said.
The latest game in the series, Ghost Recon Breakpoint recently received its final update, with Ubisoft announcing the end of support for the game. The news came just shortly after the company made the controversial decision to add NFTs into Ghost Recon Breakpoint through its new Ubisoft Quartz system.
Currently, it is unclear what NFT integration will look like in the new project as, since the backlash against the launch of NFT items, there has been almost no news from the Quartz platform development team. Two sources familiar with Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab told Kotaku that the company will "have more to share regarding Ubisoft Quartz at a later date".
