The project was initially announced in 2022.

Ubisoft's project U is again in development after two years since its announcement in 2022.
Project U, codenamed Pathfinder, is a session-based co-op shooter whose story is set on Earth, invaded by legions of machines aiming to mechanize all life. It has PvE gameplay, in which ten teams of four fight progressively more difficult AI enemies. Finally, players enter the middle of the map, where they need to combat the boss.
As reported by Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming, Ubisoft quietly resumed the project's development this spring with a new producer and team. Tom Henderson pointed out that the game's main flaw was the lack of replayability. The developers tried to add more variations to the map, with more biomes and bosses, but still, the problem wasn't solved, resulting in an expanded budget for the project. However, Ubisoft believes that PvE games still have potential. For instance, Helldivers 2 was an immense success.
