Ubisoft Scalar eliminates the limits of local hardware for players and enables bigger game worlds.
Ubisoft announced Scalar – a new foundational technology that enables games "to utilize the power of the cloud to ensure that developers aren’t limited by time or hardware, but by their imaginations." The tech is supposed to make game worlds bigger, more social, and richer.
Ubisoft Scalar removes hardware constraints by focusing on cloud computing.
"Cloud computing – what Ubisoft Scalar enables – means the processing power for a game isn’t tied to a single machine, but a decentralized computation system. The processing is taking place in the cloud. This eliminated the limits of local hardware for players, improves the quality of games, and opens up new possibilities for game developers," said Ubisoft Managing Director Patrick Bach.
While it means better and bigger games without hardware dependence for players, developers will be able to exercise their creativity and change one part of the game without affecting others.
"By placing microservices independently in the cloud, Ubisoft Scalar enables developers to update and improve one service without impacting others, or even add new features or components to a game without interrupting play sessions."
The cloud computing concept is not new, but we are yet to see a good example of the tech used in a game. Ubisoft Stockholm is now working on an IP using the Scalar, but it's still too early to talk about the project.
