Ubisoft & Tencent Seem to Have Put Buyout Talks On Pause

Each of the parties allegedly has reasons for the potential halt.

Ubisoft

Negotiations regarding Ubisoft's buyout by Tencent seem to have been stopped.

The news about the potential deal appeared last October, and the alleged goal was to stabilize Ubisoft and increase its value. Later, Ubisoft confirmed the information about the acquisition, saying that it was indeed considering several "strategic options" to meet the needs and expectations of its stakeholders.

Recently, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson shared that the discussions between the parties seemingly had stopped, as the Guillemot family reportedly wanted to retain control over the company. Tencent probably wouldn't agree to that condition.

According to the journalist, halting negotiations is a strategy that is beneficial for both parties. He explained that Tencent would continue to snap up shares and raise its stake, while the Guillemot brothers would want to wait until February and March when the upcoming Assasin's Creed Shadows will be released. A successful launch might strengthen the Guillemot brothers' negotiating power, and the controversial situation might give Tencent more opportunities to increase its stake at a lower share value.
