Last week, B3FX Studios launched MatPlus, a new Blender add-on introduced as an alternative to Substance 3D Painter, all within Blender itself. The tool immediately drew significant attention from the community for its promising features. However, the $75 starting price raised some eyebrows, particularly given the existence of free alternatives like Ucupaint, which already offer similar functionality.
Fortunately, Riley Brown took a closer look at MatPlus and wrote a comparative review alongside Ucupaint. In his article, he concluded that, in its current state, MatPlus doesn't offer enough functionality beyond what Ucupaint already provides.
While MatPlus is ambitious, it currently suffers from serious stability issues, and the pricing doesn't seem justified. It also gives the impression of being "very much trying to be Substance 3D Painter in Blender". Which, Riley notes, isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in his view, Ucupaint is a better balance, feeling like a natural, layer-based texturing tool built specifically for Blender.
