With the Artemis II astronauts completing their flyby of the Moon, having captured stunning photos of the far side, let's delve into some fascinating space artwork. Simon Blakeney, Technical Account Manager at Epic Games, recreated this lunar surface using real NASA data.
The artwork, brought to life with Unreal Engine's Lumen, uses data from Cesium Moon Terrain, which combines multiple datasets from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) into a single tileset, with the highest-resolution data focused on the Moon's critical polar regions.
The scene uses Deferred Rendering with a Maximum Screen Space Error of 0.1 and a Culled Screen Space Error of 0.1, combined with increased Maximum Simultaneous Tile Loads, increased Maximum Cached Bytes, and an increased Loading Descendant Limit, ensuring a highly detailed and smoothly streaming lunar landscape.
