Reworked completely for Unity 6, with some new features and effects, along with added support for mobile VR.
Technical Environment Artist Jonathan van Immerzeel, also known as Staggart Creations, has officially released the long-awaited Underwater Rendering extension for Stylized Water 3, his versatile solution for various water-related applications with a user-friendly design and a focus on artistic freedom.
According to the developer, this extension underwent a lengthy development process, during which it was completely rewritten to support Render Graph. This overhaul also provided an opportunity to redesign the core mechanics of the effect. Notably, the rendering no longer relies on post-processing, resulting in significant performance and flexibility improvements, which is especially beneficial for mobile VR.
Features include:
- Underwater fog based on the water's deep/shallow colors;
- Waterline rendering for partially submerged cameras;
- Scene lighting is translated into the underwater fog, including sub-surface scattering. Reacts to dynamic directional and ambient lighting;
- Caustics rendering on geometry. Directional projection option;
- The underside of the water is correctly shaded to seamlessly match;
- Includes sub-graphs to add underwater fog support for transparent Shader Graphs (+ASE).
This extension requires Stylized Water 3 (version 3.1.0 or newer) and Render Graph to be enabled. It also works with the Dynamic Effects extension: ripples and shoreline waves affect the camera's waterline.
