Check out this unique-looking, painterly-style 3D fox model, created by a brilliant Character Artist and Digital Art Instructor, Kalen Stewart. Boasting a truly unusual texturing style resembling real-life puppets used for stop-motion animations, the model was set up to capture the art style of Wiebke Rauers' amazing illustrations and bring it into a 3D space.
To create the character's hand-painted-like fur, Kalen developed a Houdini setup that converts the groom into three geometry layers: a Fill Layer for the base, Hair Dots/Sprites for the broader strokes, and Ribbons for the pencil lines. Additionally, Kalen utilized shaders to achieve the perfect texture and light interaction.
