Unity Shares An Update On Its Runtime Fee Policy

The Unity team addressed the recent situation with new fees in an open letter.

Unity finally provided an update on their recently announced Runtime Free policy – Marc Whitten, who is leading Unity Create (the Unity engine and editor teams), shared some news in a new blog post.

First, the team shared that their Unity Personal plan "will remain free and there will be no Runtime Fee for games built on Unity Personal." Unity decided to increase the cap from $100,000 to $200,000 – they also decided to get rid of the requirement to use the Made with Unity splash screen.

"No game with less than $1 million in trailing 12-month revenue will be subject to the fee," wrote the team. "For those creators on Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise, we are also making changes based on your feedback."

As for the Runtime Fee policy, Unity claims it will apply beginning with the next LTS version of Unity which should be released sometime in 2024. The team states that the projects that are currently shipped and the projects that are already in the works will not be included "unless you choose to upgrade them to this new version of Unity."

For the projects that are subject to the runtime fee, Unity shared they will be offering a choice to pick a 2.5% revenue share or the calculated amount based on the number of new people engaging with a game each month. "Both of these numbers are self-reported from data you already have available. You will always be billed the lesser amount," noted Unity.
