The artist used Vertex Animation Textures to make this possible.
Technical Artist and a friend of 80 Level Simon Verstraete, who is well-known for creating cool projects in Unreal Engine and Houdini, has managed to make UE5's Lyra Starter Game, released alongside the engine itself back in April, fully destructible. In a demonstration video, the artist demonstrated bullets affecting the environment and gradually destroying it piece by piece.
The author commented that this project was made using conditional Vertex Animation Textures. These VAT objects hold a baked simulation of destruction and then get played on impact and mask of virtual textures. You can learn more about the project here.
"VAT shows a lot of promises and flexibility. There are definitely areas where it could be improved and have some ideas to polish this more," comments Simon. "The overall system works really well and performance is decent, something to improve is, for example, collisions."
