Valve Confirms Plans on Creating Next Generations of Steam Deck
The company revealed that Steam Deck will be a "multi-generational product line" and shared that it will use the community's feedback in building future versions of the portable PC.
Valve started shipping Steam Decks in February 2022, and while it hasn't disclosed the sales figures for the device, it seems that the portable PC has been a huge success for the company. Apparently, as a result of Steam Deck's great performance, Valve decided to create a successor to the original device.
The company revealed its plans regarding the new version of the portable PC in a 50-page booklet about the Steam Deck published in preparation for the console’s launch in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan. In a section of the booklet titled "The Future: more Steam Decks, more SteamOS," Valve shares that it plans to support the Steam Deck for years – and not only with new software upgrades but with new hardware as well.
"In the future, Valve will follow up on this product with improvements and iterations to hardware and software, bringing new versions of Steam Deck to market," the booklet reads. "Like the original, and like all PCs, these future products will continue to provide access to the same Steam game catalog that gamers already know and love."
The company also shared that it intends to use the community's feedback in building the next versions of the portable PC to help the next generations of Steam Deck bring a better user experience.
"This is a multi-generational product line. Valve will support Steam Deck and SteamOS well into the foreseeable future," Valve wrote. "We will learn from the Steam community about new uses for our hardware that we haven’t thought of yet, and we will build new versions to be even more open and capable than the first version of Steam Deck has been."
Steam Deck officially launched on February 25, and while it is still pretty hard to get hold of the device, users can put down a reservation and wait for an email confirming that there’s Steam Deck available for purchase. In June, the company also shared that it has boosted the production of the device and more than doubled the number of Steam Decks being shipped each week so there is a chance that the availability date will be sooner than users initially expected.
