Valve boss Gabe Newell shared that the company has no plans to launch the first-party subscription service in the nearest future, however, it is ready to help Microsoft bring its Game Pass to Steam.
Valve boss Gabe Newell confirmed that the company does not plan to develop the first-party gaming subscription service for Steam Deck.
When talking to PC Gamer, Newell commented: "I don't think it's something that we think we need to do ourselves, building a subscription service at this time." Speaking of bringing Game Pass to Steam, he, however, noted that Valve would be "more than happy" to help Microsoft launch its subscription service on its service.
Although apparently, we won't see a "Steam Pass" in the nearest future, it seems that due to the popularity of subscription systems including Microsoft's one there is a chance that Game Pass games can appear on Steam. Microsoft has already stopped selling its games exclusively through the Microsoft Store launching games like Flight Simulator and Forza Horizon 5 on the platform. Besides, Bethesda recently announced that it would shut its launcher to put its games on Steam in the future.
Nonetheless, according to Newell, Microsoft and Valve are only in the early negotiations stage here, so apparently, we won't see PC Game Pass on Steam any time soon. "We’ve talked to people there quite a bit about that topic," shared Newell. "If your customers want it, then you should figure out how to make it happen. That’s where we’re at."
