The current hero-based MMR probably can't keep up with an influx of new players and needs much extra work.
Valve's Deadlock has been out for just over a week, and it's no wonder that the game has some issues that need to be fixed, one of them is MMR.
On the Discord community, one of the players asked if Deadlock had a matchmaking system. Valve's developer Yoshi responded that the current hero-based MMR didn't work well and would be more effective once the developers finished a full rewrite of the system that they were working on at the moment.
According to players, the current MMR system is not functioning properly and requires further development. Some players think that issues with the matchmaking system happen due to the influx of active players: "When I started, the player base was like 20k active at a time, now it's 150k." Others suppose that the issue occurred because many new, inexperienced players have entered the game recently. Anyway, a lot of people complain that they have been paired with players who have entirely different levels of experience, which leads either to losing constantly or to easy wins, and it is not the gameplay experience you would like to have.

At Deadlock's recently revealed Steam page, Valve stated that the game is still in the early development stages, features experimental gameplay, and is still being tested. After the company had announced Deadlock, which still had limited access via invites or playtesters, it already became an enormous success, reaching almost 90,000 concurrent players on the reveal day and peaking at over 106,000 online players a few days later.
