Valve Is Reportedly Working on a New Standalone VR Headset

Rumors have it that Valve may be developing a new VR headset codenamed "Deckard".

Valve may be working on a new standalone headset codenamed "Deckard" that might help players experience different VR entertainment products available on Steam.

The new headset was first rumored by YouTuber SadlyItsBradley who found the first mentions of Deckard in SteamVR files back in September 2021. Those rumors were also corroborated by Ars Technica whose sources confirmed this information "is legitimate."

Recently, SadlyItsBradley published a new video claiming that Valve is set to unveil the new device in a month or two. The YouTuber says that he was able to data-mine a new Steam VR beta update finding new details about the VR headset.

He pointed out that an important clue was in the "deckard_devtools" command that he found in the source code which hinted that the rumored headset is ready for Dev Tools functionality and is far into development. After some code digging, SadlyItsBradley discovered two new systems in the SteamVR setup. Their structure is very similar to the Steam Deck menu which suggests that a similar operating system is being prepared for Deckard VR headsets.

In the video, he claims that the new headset will indeed work as a standalone device, although it also has the ability to connect to a PC via Wi-Fi.

In addition, SadlyItsBradley also published patent images showing drawings of a VR headset which is allegedly the Deckard headset.
