Vampire Survivors Will Get New Engine, DLCs & Updates in 2023
poncle ended 2022 with a recap and a promise of new content in the future.
Vampire Survivors was definitely one of the most popular games of 2022, winning multiple awards and giving a new life to wave-based roguelites. Its developer poncle reminisced about the previous year's achievements and shared its plans for 2023.
While poncle managed to port Vampire Survivors to all major platforms, the mobile version seems to have been challenging as nobody wanted to support the developer's "non-predatory" monetization system. Very quickly, clones of the project started appearing everywhere, so the team was forced to release the mobile game as soon as possible. Because of that, there are still several features not yet implemented in this version, planned to be done this year.
Another important change that should be completed in 2023 is a new engine for PC. When the launcher is ready, you'll be able to choose what game version to launch and with what options. The developer is planning to support the JavaScript version "for quite a bit, until at some point next year, when we'll just swap to the new engine altogether, as maintaining both versions of the game will mostly be a waste of time once they're unrecognizable from one another."
poncle shared that the first version of the new engine was 10 times more performing than the current one, "but the game physics behaved in a very realistic way compared to the arcade-y nature of the original", so the team eventually focused on fidelity rather than performance. The new engine will still bring better performance, improved hardware compatibility, and more options.
The post also promises more DLCs and updates to be coming this year. The additional content will only add more characters/weapons/stages, while the main game will keep getting updated regularly with main game mechanics and content "so that no key feature will ever be gatekept by a paywall."
Additionally, poncle revealed that it is working on another project, although the developer didn't offer many details:
"There's something weird and big (in terms of pixels) coming soon to the Steam public beta, and since the Legacy of the Moonspell DLC has been a success, The Directer will soon offer to take the survivors to yet another world in search for the vampire."
