NPD Group revealed its research data on the Q1 sales in the video games industry in the U.S. According to the report, March sales of 2020 are the highest since March 2008 and reached $1.6 billion.  However, the overall Q1 2020 sales are declined, compared to the same time period last year.

The beginning of the quarter didn’t go well, and sales fall in January 26 % and February 29%. In March 2020, all categories had a huge increase in sales with hardware, software, and accessories & game cards increasing 63 %, 34 %, and 12 %, respectively. Such differences in reported spends are mostly due to the lockdown happening across the states.

“As communities have practiced social distancing and observed stay at home orders across the United States over the past weeks, many people have turned to video games as a means of finding connections. Whether together on the couch playing locally, or playing online, gaming has generated increased engagement, which has resulted in corresponding increases in consumer spend,” said Mat Piscatella, a games industry analyst at The NPD Group.
